Monitoring Water Quality on the Pocono Plateau

The association's volunteer water quality monitoring program was developed in consultation with the Monroe County Planning Commission (MCPC), the Monroe County Conservation District (MCCD) and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources (now DEP). This sampling program complements the monitoring efforts of the MCPC and the upstream Tobyhanna Conservation Association. The following combination of activities provides information about the quality of surface water throughout the watershed:

  • Fifteen volunteers monitor twenty-three stream sites on a monthly basis. This analysis includes visual observation, physical characterization, water temperature, air temperature, pH, water depth, and flow rate.

  • Supplementary analysis of conductivity, fecal coliform, or other wastewater related parameters is conducted as necessary.

  • Macroinvertebrate sampling and analysis through the Annual Water Quality Study is performed by Monroe County, with addition sites being sampled through the use of TCTCWA funds.

  • Monitoring the performance of the eight sewage treatment plants in the watershed is accomplished by reviewing the monthly discharge monitoring reports which are submitted to DEP.
